Subsistence Farming at Emerald Gate Farm
Sad to report we lost Polly at Christmas and recently Clyde left us on Memorial Day. Still grieving. But I was able to find two puppies to take over their important duties on the farm. Polly and Clyde II are now 4 months old and are bringing a new joy to all they meet. Still growing and learning the ropes. Brother and sister are so happy and active and are mingling with all the yard birds and cats. They are friendly with all visiting dogs…for now anyway. They entertain each other but are still a handful for me.
The farm is functioning well. Lots of summer produce and new chicks showing up every few days. Easter freeze ruined the cherry crop but Asian Pears doing great. Plums and peaches failed because of the freeze. But berries of all flavors are looking great. Already eating some red raspberries and a flood yet to come.
My horse Hazel has gone to another farm to try to have a baby.
The Covid Pandemic has made this farm a very popular place.
So many families want to get out of the house and escape to a safe place in the mountains. Business has been very good. Calendar nearly full. I hope you can find time to visit.

The Pandemic has changed the normal seasonal schedules. Kids are homeschooling now. My excellent high speed wifi makes this the perfect place to bring the kids. They can learn online and learn hands on while “playing outside” on the farm.

This is a working subsistence mountain side farm. A great place to stay in the mountains and a destination as well. Lots to do right here. I stay in a small cabin by the barn close to the animals I care for. And I do all other daily farm related chores. If you want, you can share the farm activities with me. Help harvest fresh eggs and care for the animals. Lots of other activities here like fishing, outdoor cooking, foraging, hiking, shooting and more. Rates vary according to how many in your party and the time of year and are very negotiable. Don’t hesitate to inquire. Last minute bookings are really appreciated.
With a wide open summer calendar I am going back to last season's rates. This season is special with all my fruit trees producing bumper crops. Even the Paw Paw trees have fruit for the first time. Berries galore as always. New chicks. Two pigs and of course Polly and...
We have a brand new solar power system to keep things going during a power outage. A limited program for now, but will be adding panels and batteries over time to become totally independent. It was quite a learning experience putting it in. Ready to share what I have...
Just now regrouping after a snow event that covered everything in 2 feet of heavy wet snow. So many broken trees that there will be fire wood for the s'more pit for a long time. Lost power for 48 hours. Generator kept important things going. The repair crews did...

We are located on 13 acres of beautiful rolling mountain property with so much to do you’ll spend most of your time right here. It’s very accommodating having the main quarters all on one floor. Drive into the two-car garage and go right into the kitchen. There are ponds, gardens, creeks, springs and mountain hiking trails to explore. The ‘Farm Stay’ experience has yard birds, fish and egg laying chickens and sometimes a pig or 2. You’re welcome to enjoy the eggs and sample whatever is in season from the fruit trees, grape vines and gardens.
